What will prepare students for a successful career in a global society? At Rice University we believe three key opportunities will best equip our students for the future.
Developing students’ LEADERSHIP skills by helping shape them into trailblazers in their personal, business and community lives.
In May 2015, Rice alumni Ann and John Doerr donated $50 million to create Rice University’s Doerr Institute for New Leaders, led by retired Brig. Gen. Tom Kolditz, who oversaw leadership training at Yale and West Point. Through the Doerr Institute, Rice students are assessed and a four-year comprehensive, custom-made plan is developed, which includes hands-on, real-world experience and guidance from personal coaches. A hallmark is the institute’s focus on cultural and global diversity and inclusion. The three measurable goals of the institute are: to deliver new knowledge and skills; accelerate the lessons learned from experience; and increase reflection, self-awareness and leadership identity.
Beyond establishing startups, Rice ENTREPRENEURSHIP is about creating opportunities to nurture innovation and foster change within existing organizations.
Rice’s Entrepreneurship Initiative was founded in 2015 with the goal of transforming Rice into the “Entrepreneurial University.” Rice’s combination of top-ranked engineering and sciences, a strong business school and, especially, a creative student body cultivates a natural environment for innovation and entrepreneurship. Rice provides a collection of curricular and co-curricular activities meant to prepare students for the process of entrepreneurship — aimed at action in the private and nonprofit sectors. A combination of leading academics and practitioners ensures that students are exposed to a broad range of perspectives and experiences throughout their entrepreneurship journey.
Taking education out of the classroom means our INTERNSHIPS give students practical, real-life work experience in their chosen career field.
Professional experience is an important stepping-stone to success for Rice students. Through the Initiative for Students, Rice offers the Owl Edge Internship and Externship programs to provide students with exposure to professions and workplaces. In order to ensure that our students have a wide range of internship opportunities, Rice has set up the Owl Edge Experience Fund, which helps give students access to a wide range of organizations and experiences.
At Rice, we dedicate ourselves to giving students the education and experience that will ready them to be innovative, world leaders.
That’s what we do at Rice University — apply unconventional wisdom to solve today’s problems and deliver tomorrow’s solutions.
