The Doerr Institute for New Leaders rejects authoritative definitions of leadership. It believes that the most useful way to define leadership is in collaboration with each new leader, in alignment with their culture of origin with the spectrum of diversity represented by their experiences and personal characteristics and with a vision of the culture in which they want to live and work.
Established in 2015, the Institute offers Rice undergraduate students from every major the opportunity to be guided by a certified leadership coach. Professional coaching aims to influence the capacity of Rice students to lead by increasing their self-awareness and giving them professional assistance in personal development. Through the program, the coach and student create a plan to achieve developmental goals that align with the studentâ€™s existing commitments and involvement â€“ such as classroom project teams, athletic teams, musical groups and employment roles.
Recognizing that Rice students have a special affinity for leading in flat, non-hierarchical groups and teams, the Institute is committed to evidence-based methods that produce immediately measurable advancement toward studentsâ€™ goals, as well as long-term growth.
